Nursing, Midwifery and Teaching are essential service professions and should be exempt from HECS fees. These professions are in crisis as numbers are dropping and the average age is now 45 -48 years. Every effort must be made by government to make these professions as attractive as possible to encourage young people to take up these career paths. Removing HECS fees is one way of supporting these essential services.
