Candidate statement
Since his admission as a legal practitioner in August 2003, Mr Susai Benjamin OAM has been actively involved in the affairs of the NSW Law Society.
During the years after his admission as a legal practitioner, he saw the need to help disadvantaged and vulnerable people in Western Sydney.
Having worked with Office of State Revenue/now Revenue NSW, Mr Benjamin conducted several hundreds of matters for the Chief Commissioner of State Revenue.
Mr Benjamin has been active in the community helping people needing legal support for many years. Since this demand for legal support increased, he with the support of many volunteers started the community legal centre, known as Toongabbie Legal Centre (TLC).
TLC was grown to meet the unmet need for legal help in his own community. Mr Benjamin holds a law degree, a Bachelor of Science and a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work equivalent to an MA in Social Work, this combination of legal, scientific and social work training has shaped his practice grounded as much in understanding his clients’ circumstances as in the law itself. His travel over 45 countries has given him a greater understanding of cross-cultural skills.
On 10 February 2023, Mr Benjamin resigned his employment with the Revenue NSW.
Since then he has been devoting his time to strengthen and expand TLC‘s work in the community.
TLC’s Patron, Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, has supported the centre’s vision since 2008.
TLC holds annual dinner to support its work. TLC does not receive recurring funding. Chief Justices of High Court, Supreme Court and successive Attorney Generals have attended these dinners.
Susai Benjamin is keen to support the struggles of sole practitioners.
Principal Solicitor at Toongabbie Legal Centre. Mr Benjamin would greatly value the opportunity to represent members on the Law Society Council in 2027.

His key goal is to encourage all practitioners to help and support vulnerable and disadvantaged peoples’ access to the legal system.
