Candidate statement
I am seeking to be re-elected to the Law Society of NSW Council:
1. to improve support for young lawyers entering the profession,
2. to support the appropriate use and oversight of artificial intelligence in legal practice, while preserving the critical role of solicitors for our clients and communities,
3. to ensure that CPD opportunities are relevant to solicitors' practices, and
4. to support the profession in adapting to the new anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing framework.
I have been a Partner at Mallesons since 2009 specialising in complex disputes and class action matters.
I am also a strong supporter of pro bono initiatives, having volunteered on community legal centres over the course of three decades. I grew up on the Mid North Coast, and understand the importance of solicitors to regional communities (and the importance of regional law societies). I am also a member of the North Metropolitan Law Society. If re-elected, I believe that I will be able effectively to promote these priorities and contribute to the Society's activities generally by virtue of my governance experience, my legal and management skills, my enthusiasm for the role, and my three years to date on Council. With reference to the Society's skills framework:
• I have been practising in the areas of dispute resolution and litigation for over 30 years, advising clients on matters including directors' duties and risks in the financial and professional services sectors.
• I have been a Partner at Mallesons for over 15 years, mentoring a range of solicitors and staff members whilst assisting in the general management of the firm. I am a member of the Mallesons’ board.
• I have been a director and volunteer at various stages at community legal centres, including at the Marrickville Community Legal Centre and the Youth Law Australia Community Legal Centre. I am also a director of legalsuper, and serve on the Audit & Risk Committee of The Law Society.
• I am a working group member of the Supreme Court of New South Wales’ initiative to improve training for lawyers in their first two years of practice. I have also been a member of the Federal Court class action users' group, helping to represent the views of the profession on existing and emerging class actions issues.
• I am comfortable engaging in public advocacy, having provided media commentary on class actions matters during my career.
• I am supportive of the activities of the Society, and its importance to the profession, having been a Councillor since 2023, and the current chair of the Society's Fidelity Fund Management Committee and the Scheme Administration Committee. I also participate as a member of the Professional Conduct Committee and the Litigation law and Policy Committee.
• Most importantly, I am eager to contribute to the Society and its members and will continue appropriately to prioritise its work if elected.
It is a responsibility and a privilege to serve on Council. To support the skills and diversity we need on Council, I also encourage you to support the election of two fellow solicitors, Lauren Absalom and Michael Seton.
