Lynda Cheshire

Candidacy statement:
It would be an honour to represent the Academic Board on the University Senate.

My six years as Head of School have equipped me for this role. I have a comprehensive understanding of the broader imperatives that shape decision-making, but I also speak up for my academic colleagues, engaging critically and respectfully with university policies, processes and culture to ensure our actions align with our values.

I show leadership in challenging situations, offering balance and clarity among diverging perspectives. Through service on the Academic Board Standing Committee, Joint Consultative Committee, and other university bodies, I contribute to effective governance and policy development across all dimensions of the academic endeavour.

We know the challenges facing the university sector - funding constraints, regulatory pressures, declining trust, and evolving student needs. These times demand principled leadership that can balance adaptation with academic excellence. I believe I have the requisite qualities for this work.

Kelly Greenop

Candidacy statement:
I was elected to Academic Board in 2020 and hold a teaching and research role in the School of Architecture, Design and Planning. I am now standing for UQ Senate to bring an experienced academic staff voice, building on my Board knowledge and advocacy. My priority is ensuring Senate focuses on the University’s public good role—accountable to students, staff and wider communities. As you may have seen during my time on Academic Board, I raise important issues and ensure staff and student concerns are heard in genuine discussion. I will do the same on Senate, representing our shared interests and helping ensure the current national spotlight on university governance strengthens and modernises UQ’s mission: advancing knowledge, educating future generations, and serving our communities.

Greg Hainge

Candidacy statement:
I am standing for this position one final time because I care deeply about this institution, our staff and students and believe that I have the experience and expertise to make effective and constructive contributions to the business of the Senate. Currently Head of the School of Languages and Cultures, I have broad experience across the University, formal training in governance and leadership and a strong record of service to both the University sector and my academic disciplines. I believe I have the insights needed to ensure the Senate remains a governing body that understands the importance and distinctiveness of the University’s mission as it helps to set the course of the University’s strategy and oversee its operations. On a personal note, as first in family to go to University I am passionate about our equity targets and am never afraid to speak up when need be.

Jason Ferris

Candidacy statement:
BPsych(Hons), MBiostats, PhD, AAICD

Professor Jason Ferris is a research-focused academic in HMBS Faculty and Deputy Director of UQ’s Data Science Collaborative Research Platform. Recognised as a Future Academic Leader (2020), he has been at UQ since 2012 and has championed visibility for platform academics, affirming their central role in enabling UQ’s research excellence. He also led the development of KeyPoint, a Trusted Research Environment awarded UQ’s 2023 Innovators of the Year, demonstrating his capacity to deliver transformative, institution-wide digital infrastructure.

Jason completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors’ Course and brings proven governance expertise alongside academic leadership. He serves in senior advisory roles with the World Health Organization and Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, providing independent evaluation of alcohol and drug epidemiology to inform policy and practice.

He will bring integrity, foresight, and a strong voice for inclusive and evidence-informed decision-making to the Academic Board.

Mark Midwinter

Candidacy statement:
I am standing for the University of Queensland Senate to uphold our founding purpose as the "people's university" through strategic oversight that enables UQ to deliver highly sought-after graduates, lead in postgraduate education, and leverage research capabilities to address pressing global challenges.
Senate's oversight role is critical as we navigate AI's transformational impact. Rather than viewing this as a threat, we must embrace the opportunity to refocus on developing critical thinking and uniquely human capacities: moral reasoning, creative imagination, and navigating uncertainty. This aligns with our commitment to delivering graduates prepared for future success through rich educational experiences.
My priorities include evidence-based policy making balancing strategic objectives with academic freedom, supporting our role as a trusted partner in entrepreneurship and knowledge exchange, and ensuring our values-led commitment to public good, reconciliation, and inclusive practices.
I am committed to oversight structures that strengthen UQ's global reach while serving our diverse community.

Ted Nannicelli

Candidacy statement:
I am running for Senate because I am committed to the principle of shared governance, and my track record puts me in a good position to lobby for it at the highest levels of UQ. During my two-term tenure as an elected member of Academic Board (currently on Academic Board Standing Committee), I have worked collegially across UQ to reduce managerialism and increase the agency and autonomy of academic staff. I have vocally criticized decisions by the University Senior Executive Team (USET) that I believe undermined academic collegiality and self-governance, but I have done so in a way is respectful and constructive. I have also sought to build consensus among USET and my colleagues in the NTEU – as evidenced by the recent proposal to increase the number of elected members of Academic Board. On Senate, I will continue to advocate for shared governance and work collegially to achieve it.

Hui Ma

Candidacy statement:
I have been with UQ for over 17 years, progressing from postdoctoral researcher to research fellow, lecturer, and now senior lecturer in electrical engineering. If elected, I will champion inclusive and responsive decision-making, and strategic collaboration to ensure UQ remains agile and globally competitive in an evolving higher education landscape. I will advocate for most academics whose contributions are vital but often less visible—those driving teaching and research across the University.

Awais Babri

Candidacy statement:
Dr. Awais Saleem Babri (PhD, GradCertEdu (Clinical), PGDipSc (Anatomy), MBBS) is a highly accomplished academic with over two decades of sustained excellence in teaching, curriculum design, assessment innovation, research, and leadership at The University of Queensland and beyond. Renowned for curriculum and assessment redesign, he has led major innovations such as the redevelopment of BIOM7121 and PHRM2102, achieving outstanding student feedback and recognition. Dr. Babri has secured over $105K in competitive grants, advancing projects in virtual reality classrooms, digital image repositories, and student-staff partnerships, one of which received the international SEDA Award. He also founded the Gross Anatomy Evaluations Network, serves as Vice President of ANZACA, and contributes to ANZAHPE’s DEI initiatives, making him a strong candidate for the Academic Board.

Stefanie Becker

Candidacy statement:
As a member of the UQ community since 2007, I bring both academic and leadership experience, within the university and externally, that has given me a deep appreciation of our strengths and the challenges ahead.
If elected to Senate, I will advocate for UQ to be both the best possible workplace for staff and the leading university in Australia. While UQ has a sound strategic plan, we often lack clear key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure progress. If elected, I will support the development of smart, evidence-based KPIs to strengthen governance, track progress, and ensure that financial decisions deliver their intended benefits.
Staff wellbeing is central to our success. I will promote a more cohesive approach to supporting staff, alongside fair and transparent processes for development, promotion, and hiring — creating a positive, supportive environment in which all staff can thrive.

Helen Marshall

Candidacy statement:
Across the university and industry, there's growing recognition that we must move beyond traditional academic silos to find creative solutions to our generation's most pressing challenges: geopolitical upheaval, climate change, and artificial intelligence. The pace of change has left many with future shock—but universities can lead the response.

As Director of Teaching and Learning, I develop workload allocation models prioritising equity, support culturally and linguistically diverse student cohorts, and bridge policy with practice across university levels. My interdisciplinary approach fosters partnerships cutting across traditional boundaries, and as a union member, I champion diverse voices within governance.

My background as a world-class science fiction writer who researches foresight and scenario planning uniquely positions me to help UQ anticipate complex challenges and design strategic solutions. I make a living imagining possible futures and building others' creative capacity to navigate them and finding satisfaction in collaborative problem-solving that can thrive amid uncertainty.

Meagan Carney

Candidacy statement:
I am announcing my candidacy for the UQ Senate as a Level C staff member. By serving, I hope to gain valuable experience that will enable me to continue to grow as a capable and fair leader.

I believe I can effectively represent the needs and ideals of our academic community. My involvement in technology-driven initiatives has allowed me to explore innovative approaches to enhance T&L experiences. As a member of the Integrity Board in SMP, I have demonstrated my dedication to upholding academic standards within our institution. My service roles, ranging from industry outreach to expanding career opportunities for women underrepresented in mathematics, have taught me the value of collective thinking and cooperation to solve complex problems.

I believe that our success depends on our willingness to work as a collective. If elected, I will bring a collaborative mindset and advocate for policies that benefit our entire academic community.

As a Senate member, I will prioritise UQ's best interests above all constituencies, exercising the duty of care, skill, and diligence our institution deserves. I am committed to transparent governance, fostering inclusive decision-making that advances academic excellence while supporting our diverse community.
My proven track record in collaborative academic support, combined with extensive student-staff engagement, positions me to contribute meaningfully to Senate deliberations and advance UQ's strategic objectives. I pledge active participation, confidentiality, and dedication to our University's continued success.

As the Deputy Director of the Queensland Digital Health Centre (QDHeC) and a Professor in the Centre for Health Services Research, I currently provide academic and research leadership within QDHeC. My background in epidemiology, health services research and digital health, with a strong emphasis in the use of real-world data to drive change, provides a strong foundation to support the work of the Senate. I have a keen interest in the management of the University, specifically in relation to HDR training and mentorship of early career academics. I welcome the opportunity to bring my collective experience to Senate and help align university policy and process to best support the broad activities of UQ.

Nathalie Dehorter

Candidacy statement:
I am an active academic at UQ, with extensive experience across leading Australian and international institutions, including the Australian National University, the École Normale Supérieure Paris XI, and King’s College London, where I worked for over two decades. I bring a strong understanding of university structures, policies, and governance, having served as the Early Career Researcher representative on a university board and contributed to shaping policies that improved academic pathways. I have held major research governance roles, including as panel member for the NHMRC and Wellcome Trust fellowship assessments, and as a representative at Science meets Parliament with Science and Technology Australia. I am committed to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion, both through UQ’s HBMS EDI Committee and internationally as part of the ALBA–FENS Network, which promotes institutional change and inclusive practices in science. I am presently the Chair of the American Association of Pharmaceutical scientist's Topical Transdermal committee and an invited expert on transdermal products. My work has developed the conceptual framework to describe the physicochemical and structural characterizations of semisolid dosage forms and demonstrated that these attributes (CQAs) directly and predictably modulate the rate and extent of drug delivery. My ward winning research has directly supported new paradigms for topical and transdermal drug development, with a corresponding modernization of regulatory standards. In the United States and Europe alone, more than 80 regulatory guidances and guidelines now recommend the use of these new techniques to develop topical and transdermal products.

Kristen Lyons

Candidacy statement:
As elected academic staff member over the last 4 years I've aimed to hold UQ senior management accountable and advocated fearlessly for staff and students.

I have brought my values to Senate debates and decision making. This includes advocating for universities to serve the common good, not operate like corporations chasing metrics and revenue. It includes advocating for higher education that develops critical thinking, knowledge creation, and preparing engaged citizens who can tackle the challenges facing our world.

As teachers and researchers, I understand we are the heart of this educational mission. Our students are the next generation of educated citizens who will shape a better society through learning, knowledge, and critical engagement. Senate decisions should support this transformative purpose, not reduce academic staff to their outputs and students to consumers with purchasing credentials.

I would be honoured to continue to represent you.

I bring a unique perspective to university governance, with a background in fine arts and current postgraduate study in agricultural science. My passion lies in organic agriculture, human health, and biodiversity. If elected, I will advocate for sustainable campus initiatives that connect students and staff with nature. One proposal I hope to champion is a student-led organic produce garden, integrating food waste from campus kitchens, grass clippings, pruned branches, and manure into compost, cultivating fruits and vegetables, and redistributing harvests to participants. This closed-loop system would promote ecological literacy, reduce waste, and foster community.I also envision the garden as a cross-disciplinary space—merging ecological function with artistic beauty, powered by solar pumps, rainwater tanks, and enriched with native plants to support biodiversity. It would be a living classroom and a home for wildlife, a micro-ecosystem where sustainability meets creativity.

Richard LIU

Candidacy statement:
Hi, I'm Richard. As UQU Welfare Officer this year, I expanded free breakfasts, dinners, and the Food Co-Op by acting on student feedback and voice. On Senate, I’ll keep putting students first and make promise achieved!!

I will push UQ to pause new, non-essential building projects and redirect future capital budgets to students instead. Every dollar saved from construction will be reallocated to three urgent priorities:

★ Reduce fees → cut costs for both international and domestic students so education stays affordable.

★ Support HDR students → increase stipends and research funding to reward postgraduate work and improve research quality.

★ Expand welfare support → strengthen mental health, housing, food security and financial assistance so students can study without hardship.

No more prestige projects while students struggle. Every dollar saved goes back into affordability, support and fairness for all.

One small vote for Senate, one giant leap for UQ students!

"If we want better outcomes at UQ, we can’t just accept problems", we need to push for solutions. University life is full of challenges, but those challenges are also opportunities to rethink, improve, and make the most of everything UQ has to offer.

I believe the Senate must go beyond listening, it should question the way things are done and demand practical outcomes that actually make a difference. For me, this means confronting issues head-on and driving solutions that maximise support, opportunity, and transparency for students.

Whether it’s academic support, clearer decision-making, or stronger industry connections, I will work to ensure students get more than promises — they get results.

Let’s raise the bar together.

Your vote. Your Board. Your Vivek..

Mohid KHALIL

Candidacy statement:
My name is Mohid Khalil, and I am a first-year undergraduate Biomed student. I am throwing my hat in the ring, for the explicit purpose of being someone who can represent the needs of the student body. I have a pretty unique background, being an artsy muslim kid from rural Rockhampton, and so I want to cater towards the needs of the students who may be less represented in day-to-day affairs, being rural, Muslim, theatrical, etc. While my identities are sometimes at odds with each other, I'm glad that I'm at UQ, and I want to provide a space where you can choose to express, and self-actualise, yourself in the most authentic version of you. That's why I am nominating myself this year, and probably every year for my full (hopefully) 7 years; I found myself a little more here, and I want others to do so as well.

William CRONIN

Candidacy statement:
"I am the Senate" - Chancellor Palpatine
This inspiration quote ignited my political ambitions when I first heard it, but trust that I’m running for Senate not because I crave power (However, the Great Court could use some thrones...), but because I believe student voices shouldn’t just echo in lecture halls — they should resonate in the chambers where decisions are made. If elected, I’ll be the Senate’s reminder that students aren’t just numbers in spreadsheets; we’re the life, laughter, and occasional chaos that keep this university real. I'll attend every meeting, whether stultifying or catalytic, to make sure that UQ puts students first, always. So rest assured that a vote for William Cronin is a vote for you. Well, not literally, but, you know, I'll help you. Even if only indirectly. And remember, a vote for me is a vote for freedom, for democracy! So vote 1 William Cronin

Anto PETER

Ian LEUNG

Candidacy statement:
Hi, I’m Ian, a Science undergrad and your current Faculty Board Representative. I know how frustrating it is to chase admin and get lost in red tape.

I’m running to represent all UQ undergrads and make your voice count:
✅ Cut through red tape – implement a one-stop portal for admin requests so support reaches you faster.
✅ Champion fairness – introduce clear mental health and disability assessment pathways and automatic exam deferrals for emergencies.
✅ Boost transparency – monthly updates on policies, curriculum changes, and decisions affecting students.
✅ Expand opportunities – push for scholarships, flexible assessments, and extra-curricular funding across faculties.
✅ Act on your feedback – run termly polls and forums so your ideas shape real action.

Outside uni, I manage government projects, cutting bureaucracy and delivering results. I’ll bring the same energy to Senate. Results, not promises.

Vote Ian Leung – your voice, loud and unstoppable.

I have nominated myself for the UQ Senate as I want to make a real difference at the university to improve student welfare and experience. As a member of the Senate, I would advocate for all students and their needs to help ensure they get the most out of their experience at UQ. I've also nominated myself as I believe I have a goal-oriented mindset that ensures I will fight for what I believe in. I know that I can make a difference for the university, and being chosen to represent undergraduate students at UQ is not a responsibility I will take lightly.

Jack RYAN

Candidacy statement:
Nice to meet you! I'm Jack :)

Though I'm a student here at UQ, I'm closer to this place in lots of ways, having lived in St Lucia since childhood, and participating in Uni-Life more and more since then.

Chances are you've seen me, coaching tennis, working at the gym or even running some of your exams over at the UQ Centre! All positions I've been doing since before even starting officially here as student.

Between this and my studies, I'm here nearly every day, so I've almost definitely seen you around at some point.

Point is, UQ special place to my heart and I am keen to do all I can to mould it and the student experience here to be the best it can be for everyone.

If you see me around, please say hi, until then goodluck with all that is to come!

Kind Regards,
Jack

Samuel WONG

Candidacy statement:
G’day, I’m Samuel! I’m an Arts/Law (Honours) student.

I stand for fairness, transparency, and amplifying student voices - principles that guided my service on the UQ Assessment Sub-Committee and Misconduct Board. I’ve been a UQ Union Councillor, and this year, I served as the Co-Deputy Editor of Semper Floreat, defending free and independent student media.

If elected to the Senate, I will fight for standardised assessment times, unlimited automatic 48-hour extensions, more scholarships, cleaner restrooms, removing arbitrary assessment hurdles, implementing a uniform AI policy across all faculties, and championing the freedom of speech for all on campus.

We’ve seen higher fees. Bigger tutorials. More casual staff. Less time with professors. Students deserve better. If you want a fairer, more accessible and transparent university, then it’s time to ensure that students have a stronger voice in the Senate, and I’ll work relentlessly to defend the student perspective in every Senate decision.

Sharon CAO

I’m an enthusiastic and outgoing individual who learns and adapts quickly to new environments. I take my responsibilities seriously and have a strong sense of accountability. Previously, I served as the head of the clubs and societies department in my high school’s student council. I also have experience organizing large-scale events, such as club elections and showcase performances. These events were all successfully organized, and I’m skilled at delegating tasks efficiently to team members to ensure smooth execution. I also communicate effectively with both the school and the students, making sure that everyone’s needs and requirements are understood and addressed promptly. I’m eager to leverage my existing experience to support the ongoing work and contribute effectively. I truly hope I can become part of the team!

Hoping to graduate 2030!

Jaafar JABUR

Hi everyone, I’m Jaafar Jabur, I've been your UQ Union President in 2025. This year I’ve had the privilege of representing students across campus and observing UQ Senate meetings, which has shown me how important it is to have strong student voices in the room where major decisions are made.

If elected, I’ll keep advocating for the things that matter most to us students: better mental health and wellbeing support, stronger action to prevent sexual harassment, and ensuring freedom of speech is upheld at UQ. I’ll also push for greater accountability from Senate, ensuring students are genuinely consulted before big decisions are made, and that we get transparent updates on how those decisions affect us.

I believe governance should work for students, not above them, and I’ll bring both experience and energy to make sure our voices are always heard. I’d be honoured to continue representing students through UQ Senate.

It is essential to enhance the quality of teaching in the university, and I'm committed to advocating for more affordable tuition fees.

I'm also committed to being there and fighting for a more transparent due process for students. I'm in my third year at the University of Queensland and have faced my share of frustration due to administrative delays.

Many students have faced similar situations to mine, and despite understanding that this is not necessarily the university's fault, it's essential to have a more transparent process.

These are the things I want to fight for: staff and students can work together to build a better campus.

As alumni we have a direct interest in the ongoing reputation, standing and success of UQ given that we all have invested heavily to earn our degree/s.

Those of us who completed professional degrees want UQ and our qualifications to be valued and recognised for their quality in our professional spheres. This is equally of true for those who attended UQ solely for the satisfaction of acquiring knowledge.

It is important to balance the objectives of the managerial cohort to maintain the fabric of UQ, and, to also meet the resourcing needs of the teaching/research cohorts. Azucena Carrasco Toronjo

Candidacy statement:
I am proud to self-nominate for the Senate of The University of Queensland, an institution that has played a key role in my academic and professional journey. As a domestic student with the difficulties of an international student (because of not being a native English speaker), I can understand most student experiences, and the university's role for that matter. Since graduating, I have remained actively involved through the UQ Mentoring Program, helping students navigate their transition into their careers.
My professional experience in media, government and international affairs speaks volumes of what my skills could possibly be and what are my interests. More recently, I served as an Adviser in the Australian Senate, where I had a 'fair go' at governance practice, policy oversight, stakeholder engagement, and more. Juan Vega Esquivel

Candidacy statement:
I am a UQ graduate with qualifications in law, economics and public policy, and currently work in the Queensland Government on digital strategy and foresight. My background spans policy reform, regulatory compliance and future workforce planning.

AI is reshaping labour markets, changing the types of jobs available and the skills people need. Universities must respond by embedding digital capability, adaptability and ethical decision-making across their teaching and research. I see UQ’s role as not only preparing graduates for this shift, but also leading research into how technology will impact society and the economy.

If elected, I will bring practical experience in governance and strategy, with a focus on ensuring UQ remains relevant, accountable and prepared for change. My aim is to contribute to a Senate that helps the University deliver for students, staff and the broader community in a rapidly changing world.

Dominik Wegrecki

Candidacy statement:
I can do a one-legged squat while holding a medium-sized child.

I went to study overseas and came back with a wife.

That's right, I went to Poland, did a one-legged squat in front of a girl I just met, and she fell in love with me on the spot. 3 months later, I proposed. If that's not initiative, I don't know what is.

I am bilingual (no, that doesn't mean I have two tongues).

I've got 10 years experience in engineering.

I got fancy letters after my name: CPEng. RPEQ.

I got three daughters, but I still don't know what women want.

I can cook a damn good steak.

I'm a pretty lean guy, and I'll keep your senate lean too. Less on pointless bureaucrats and more on students and events.

10 seconds and you already know my life story. You might as well give me your vote.
