Ziggy Mioduszewski

My name is Zbigniew Mioduszewski – though most people know me as Ziggy. I’m an Executive MBA student at the Monash Business School. I have a strong track record of advocating for students as a member of the Staff Student Consultative Committee for the Executive MBA program, representing the student body as part of the Association of MBAs accreditation, serving as an industry partner for Master of Biotechnology students for 3 years, and being an active student representative throughout my undergraduate degree.

With 15 years of experience in driving change within large, complex organizations, including seven years on an executive Global Strategy and Innovation team, I bring extensive expertise to the table. I plan to leverage my skills to help enhance the student experience – for example, addressing the unfairness of huge parking fines when you could just be charged a daily rate given the app contains your registration, student ID and payment information!

As a first-generation refugee immigrant, I am committed to promoting diversity and inclusion. Having experienced post-grad and under-grad studies, and my wife completing a PhD at Monash, I am well placed to understand needs at all levels of the diverse student body here at Monash University.

I am eager to bring a fresh perspective and strong advocacy to the University Council. Together, we can tackle the challenges that matter most to students. I would be honoured to have your support in this election by voting 1 for Ziggy!
Asad Jan

Hey everyone! I’m Asad (He/Him), and I am running to be your representative on the Monash University Council.

At Monash, we navigate the crossroads of tradition and innovation. I am dedicated to bridging these divides, advocating for policies that foster respect and robustly address both immediate needs and long-term aspirations.

A core focus of my candidacy is to combat Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment (SASH) on our campus. I am committed to implementing the recommendations from the KPMG report, "Towards a Safer and More Inclusive Culture," from the University of Adelaide by enhancing support systems and ensuring our policies effectively protect every student. Creating a safe campus environment is not a priority but a necessity.

I am passionate about creating an inclusive campus culture that not only celebrates diversity but actively supports it through anti-discrimination initiatives and comprehensive mental health programs. My commitment is to ensure that every student, whether from bustling cities or remote areas, whether in lecture halls or online platforms, feels valued and supported.

Additionally, I aim to streamline our administrative processes, transforming them from bureaucratic necessities into gateways for student success. This includes simplifying procedures for special considerations and academic appeals, making them accessible.

In advocating for extended resources, I see a dual benefit: enhanced academic support through longer library hours and more study spaces, and an enriched student life with increased access to online resources, supporting both local and international students.

Vote for [1] Asad Jan—where your voice meets action, where challenges meet solutions.
John Lavanya

Hi, Hello, Vanakkam!

I'm John from India, currently pursuing my Master's in Counselling at Monash. I LOVE PEOPLE. I am happiest when I am connecting with and helping others in whatever capacity I can, which is why I am running in this election. I have been involved in activism and social work back home for the last four years, and I believe that has moulded me into a better person. I have always loved contributing meaningfully wherever I studied. I was the School Pupil Leader at Rosary Matric School (Chennai), President of the Event Management Club and French Club at Stella Maris College (Chennai), and a Student Council Member at Montfort College (Bengaluru). I also led the volunteer team of CovidCareIn—a Covid war room set up at my previous workplace, The Rise Trust, during the second wave in 2021.

Why vote for me? I am a fun, positive, smart, and grateful person. My friends say I have “golden retriever energy,” and I reckon they’re right. I enjoy dancing, singing, drawing, journalling, making art, walking by the beach, trekking, playing badminton, and of course, eating Biryani. I am also a big-time theatre kid. I love children and hope to become a renowned child psychologist someday.

If elected, I promise to always keep your best interests in mind in every aspect of this council position and to help build a community that creates space for everyone to grow, leaving things just a bit better than when we found them. THANK YOU!!!
Henry Gove

Having recently started on my journey here at Monash, I have cherished the opportunities and memories that this uni has presented me with. However I realise the need for change, real change. Focusing on the needs of US, the students that Monash is here to support. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to advocate for the real needs of the students. I was told I couldn’t do it, but that won’t stop me championing the ideas of the Monash student body.
Sohana Pasula

As someone deeply invested in community engagement at Monash University, I see tremendous potential in seizing this opportunity to foster our institution's core values and aspirations. I believe that effective communication is pivotal in driving positive change. I believe that every student's voice deserves to be heard and that our shared experiences shape the future of our university.

Leadership has always been central to who I am, whether as College Vice Captain at Emmaus Christian College or as a Non-Commissioned Officer in the Australian Army Cadets. These experiences have taught me that true leadership is about empowering others and creating spaces where everyone feels valued and supported. It’s about listening as much as leading, and fostering an environment where each individual’s unique perspective can contribute to our shared goals.
My volunteer work, particularly in community-based initiatives, has further solidified my belief that leadership is built on a foundation of service, humility, and an unwavering commitment to the common good. I am confident that my hands-on experience in various leadership roles, coupled with my dedication to inclusivity and community building, positions me well to contribute meaningfully.

My vision is to ensure that the Council not only reflects the diversity of our student body but also champions initiatives that promote equity, sustainability, and innovation. I am committed to working tirelessly to create a campus culture where every student feels heard, supported, and inspired to succeed. I look forward to the possibility of contributing to the continued success of our vibrant community.
Daisy Morris

As a candidate for the Monash University Council, I am deeply committed to enriching the academic, cultural, and social fabric of our institution. With a background in psychology and education, I offer a perspective that harmonises innovation with tradition. My goal is to ensure that Monash remains at the forefront of research, education, and community engagement, while also championing inclusivity and sustainability.

I believe in transparent governance, where every voice within the Monash community is heard and respected. With over a decade of experience as a student and real-life experience as a clinician working with students, coupled with my ongoing PhD research on leadership and imposter syndrome, I have gained a deep understanding of the challenges our students face, and the steps required to enact meaningful change. This background equips me with the insight and empathy needed to advocate effectively for all members of our community, ensuring that decisions are made with careful consideration of diverse perspectives.

If elected, I will prioritise initiatives that support student well-being, academic excellence, and meaningful engagement with our global community. I am dedicated to making decisions that reflect the values of integrity, equity, and progress.
Thank you for considering my candidacy. Overcoming the imposter syndrome I faced in just applying for this role has felt insurmountable. If elected, I look forward to the opportunity to serve the Monash community on the University Council.

Emmy Morton

In addition to my academic pursuits, I have had the privilege of serving as the President of the Monash Linguistics Society. What I want to do is clear. Actively campaigning for reform to HECS. Permanently lowering parking fees. Increasing the number of out-of-hours and online classes available.

HECS is the biggest issue affecting students, it needs reform now. My plan is to use Monash University as one of the Go8 Universities to actively build a united force with other Universities to campaign for change. HECSshould not have interest, HECS should be easier to pay off and HECS shouldn’t be blocking us from owning our own home.

Parking needs to be lowered at $2 a day and locked in for 3 years, with consideration for students experiencing hardship.

As President of Monash Residential Halls, I secured voting rights for all residents. As Welfare Officer, I expanded Free Food Mondays to include Cultural Clubs and restarted Welfare Week. And now as MAPS President, I am getting on with delivering support facilities for regional students who don’t have the same support.

I don’t want to be your standard University Councillor. Unlike many students who have taken up this role or ran for it, they have seen this role as merely a student who sits at a boardroom table with the elites of Monash University. This is not who I am.

This needs to be a position that can strongly advocate for students, not just another rubberstamp. I see this as a position that will not only advocate to the University on student’s issues, but also as a platform to campaign for student’s issues.
Archibald Callander

Hi, my name is Archie Callander, and I would be delighted to hold the position of student representative on the Monash University Council.

First and foremost, this role is as a representative of the university student body. I understand that Monash University comprises of a myriad of different backgrounds and perspectives. I can promise that I will actively listen to your concerns, advocate for your needs, and work collaboratively with the university to achieve effective outcomes for our student body.

I have experience in these sorts of roles across school, work and sporting scenarios and I am more than willing to get my hands dirty. I understand that this role requires hard work, and I am fully prepared to take on these responsibilities.

Here’s a snapshot of me. I am currently studying first year physiotherapy and In the future I would love to work in a hospital setting to help patients regain functional ability post-injury. I am a big sports fan, especially playing tennis and watching my beloved Sydney Swans.
I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to make a positive impact and am committed to working tirelessly to improve our university experience. I hope to earn your trust and support in this important role.

Thank you for your consideration and I would love your vote in this election, Archie Callander

P.S Go Swans!
Thomas Harrison

Hi there, my name is Thomas Harrison, and I am currently studying a Bachelor of Engineering.

I would like to be elected to the Monash University council as I will bring the needs of the student base to the forefront of discussion. One of the most often overlooked sections of the university is within the undergraduate body. This is counterintuitive as we are the largest single group at the university. In this role, I will ensure equity within the resources allocated for all groups and members of this institute.

I have a lot of experience serving the broader community, through organizing events such as trivia nights, sausage sizzles and other fundraising and promotional events. Through this, understand the benefits, both in mental health and the interpersonal connections, that come from such events. Hence, I will always advocate for student initiatives and any processes that may benefit them.

I am proud of this university and the incredible diversity in degrees, views, and opportunities that are available, and accommodated for students and staff alike. Such issues as the disparity in CSP coverage between degrees stifles the ability for students to freely choose their preferred fields of study and is one of the major issues that I plan on addressing within this role. Changes and improvements must not come at a detriment to any individual or group. Monash is a world class institute, but there is always potential for improvement.

Thank you for your support VOTE [1] Thomas Harrison
Candice Prior

Hi! My name is Candice Prior and I am currently studying a bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Commerce in my first year. My previous experience in similar roles to this is what I believe will give me the skills to represent my peers in the most efficient way possible. For the previous two years, I was the elected student member on my high school’s School Council, where I brought differing perspectives from over 1000 students to their educators at monthly meetings. Hence, my ability to build relationships with both students and staff to facilitate important liaisons will bring increased cohesion to Monash.

Additionally, I have experience in leading my peers and seeking their feedback through my past school positions of School Captain (2023), Student Voice Captain (2022), and Middle School Captain (2021). I therefore will understand how to network and communicate with students from different faculties, ensuring the widest representation possible.

I am also a member of the Australian Volunteer Coastguard. Through this work, I have become comfortable voicing my opinions in an environment with more senior individuals, while complying with professional meeting processes.
I enjoy doing my bit to make change and I believe that by being a part of the University Council, I would be able to use my experience to convey the wishes of my peers to uphold student voice at Monash.
Demitri Kaminis

Hey everyone! I’m Demitri, your 2024 Academic Board Representative, and I’m running to be your representative on University Council.

As a law student who currently works in the education sector, I have a deep passion for increasing accessibility to quality education and upholding student-focused policy. I will relentlessly fight for your student rights.

At Academic Board, I have advocated and made submissions which have directly resulted in achieving significant wins for students, such as:
● Reducing late penalties from 10% to 5% per day for all 80,000+ students enrolled at Monash;
● Creating a new 24/7 study space in Clayton’s Campus Centre, next to Boost;
● Initiating an Academic Board review of the delayed second semester break, with reform to be announced in coming months; and
● Establishing a single universal submission time of 11:55pm for all assignments from Semester 1, 2025.

If elected to University Council, I will fight to:
● Reduce parking prices to pre-pandemic levels, and mandate two warnings before a fine is issued;
● Cap the weight of any single assessment, including exams, at 50%;
● Deliver student discounts, or subsidies, for all on-campus food outlets to reduce the cost of purchasing food and drink;
● Increase public transport access to Monash campuses, such as by funding more shuttle buses to major transport hubs; and
● Prioritise ethical investment of Monash resources.

I promise to be your strongest student advocate.

Your vote is vital. Vote [1] Demitri Kaminis for a strong, dedicated, results-driven and independent student representative on your University Council.
Varun Raj Thangaraj

Proposal to be the Student Council member:
I’m Varun Raj,I’m happy to stand for election on behalf of the students in the University council.I will amend to make changes in how students can live and study better in this amazing university. There is always room for improvement,as I list my proposals below.
1)I propose that we shall make the process of conducting major activities democratic, where each student will have a say in their preferences.
2)I propose that there is a dedicated body in each faculty that addresses the concerns of the students, especially in assignments and career sections.
3)I propose that the university holds a get-together party with live music at least once in two months to improve camaraderie among students.
4)I propose that the students are leveraged with opportunities from where they can associate with a peer for study sessions throughout the semester, this would require an integration in the moodle where everyone can decide on their study peers.

As a passionate and dedicated member of our university community, I am eager to serve as your representative on the Student Council. I believe in fostering an inclusive and dynamic university environment where every student's voice is heard and valued.
I have a track record of taking initiative, as demonstrated by my successful fundraising efforts, and I am committed to bringing that same level of dedication to our council. Rhyannon Fricker

As a proud Dja Dja Wurrung woman, I have been a part of the Monash University community for over 20 years. I completed my undergraduate BA/LLB in the early 2000s and, after a short foray into private legal practice, I commenced a professional career spanning almost 11 years. I have worked in a range of roles from student-facing program support in the MBA programs, to academic support within the Monash Business School and finally in late 2019 I joined the Office of the General Counsel where I am currently situated as a Senior Lawyer proving advice on research and education matters to academic and professional staff.

As a lawyer I have the ability to critically evaluate proposed policies, procedures and regulations. With the breadth of experience I have across Monash both as a student and in my many different professional roles I am ideally placed to bring a knowledgeable and well-rounded perspective to the Council and to provide a voice for professional and academic staff alike.

I look forward to representing the staff of Monash and steering the strategic direction of the University.
Prof Wayne Hodgson

I am excited to be standing for Council as your staff representative. The University sector is facing rapid change, with academic and professional staff navigating increasingly complex internal and external pressures. In this uncertain environment, I will bring a thoughtful and knowledgeable voice to Council. With a strong background as both an educator and a researcher, I have had the privilege of leading a successful research program while also overseeing education programs that focus on delivering excellence and innovation. As the Dean of the Sub-Faculty of Health Sciences, I have a clear focus on maximizing the opportunities available to both staff and students, leveraging Monash’s expansive onshore and offshore footprint to drive success. Having served for nine years on the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority Board, and now as President of the Western Pacific Association for Medical Education, I have developed a deep understanding of the challenges facing both Monash and the wider education sector. I am committed to aligning our teaching and research efforts with the expectations of students, staff, and key stakeholders. As a member of Council, I will advocate strongly for excellence in research and education, while ensuring that we support and empower our academic and professional staff. I understand the challenges and rewards of working in the tertiary sector and am eager to help guide the University’s strategic direction. It would be a privilege to serve in this role, representing staff and supporting Monash in its mission to remain a global leader in education and research.
A/Prof David Logan

I have been an academic with the Accident Research Centre (MUARC) since 2001, after also completing my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at Monash. I also chair the Health, Safety & Wellbeing Committee at MUARC. My research in road safety and injury prevention has demonstrated to me that the evidence-based research and engagement we undertake at Monash—supported by knowledgeable and dedicated staff—has successfully influenced government, industry and society to understand and address all causes of death and injury.

Similarly, our education activities produce high quality graduates who take their knowledge into the world, carrying Monash’s reputation with them.

I believe strongly in the Monash Impact 2030 plan and its three overarching goals to address climate change, geopolitical security and thriving communities. I also value the balance Monash strikes between pure and applied research, both in pushing the boundaries of new knowledge as well as undertaking research informing policy to be of direct benefit to society.

As the staff representative on Council, I will strive to stand up for the interests of all Monash staff, regardless of their employment status or salary scale across the full range of responsibilities held by Council.

Every staff member is essential to the smooth and productive function of Monash, and I welcome the opportunity to represent staff at this level for the benefit of us all.
Prof Sharon Ricardo

Sharon is a research and teaching academic who joined Monash University in 2000. She leads the Kidney Therapeutics and Stem Cell Laboratory in the Biomedicine Discovery Institute and has established an international reputation in the fields of kidney disease and regenerative medicine. At Monash, Sharon has held senior leadership roles, including Academic Director, Graduate Research in the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Senior Vice-President, as well as Associate Dean, Graduate Research in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. She has previously been an active member of the Academic Board and the Academic Board Steering Committee, contributing significantly to the academic and research environment. Sharon is now seeking election to the University Council, where she hopes to leverage her extensive experience in university leadership, professional organisations, philanthropic boards, teaching, and academia. She is committed to ensuring effective representation for staff on Monash Council and believes that the Council plays a vital role in safeguarding the university's mission in teaching and research. By advocating for greater transparency and improved governance, Sharon aims to help the Council uphold the core values that support Monash’s position as a leading institution in both education and research. She is a passionate advocate for graduate research, recognising it as a cornerstone for developing the next generation of leaders who will drive our world-class research and teaching forward.
Prof Michael Ward

Monash has been on a journey of innovation and improvement over my twelve years as a professor here. The collective efforts of our people — both professional and academic staff — underpins these successes. Ensuring that our people are treated with respect and fairness is fundamental to our values, our future, and the best interests of the university as a whole. If elected member of Council I pledge to keep a focus on you, the people that make Monash.

For the past eight years, I have been the Head of the Department of Economics at Monash. I have also served on Academic Board and as an associate dean for the Business School. I have a broad perspective informed by working at multiple research-intensive universities in both Australia and the U.S. and at different types of organisations: a College of Natural Resources, a Policy School, a Sustainability Institute, and now a Business School.

The recent external review of my department began with “There has been a dramatic improvement in the quality of research and teaching over the last ten years. Morale within the Department is high …. The academic staff have a strong sense of inclusion.” This took a team effort of both academic and professional staff across all roles. I am proud of what we have achieved together, and I hope to continue this as your elected member to Council.
Dr Yogita Ahuja

Since 2008, Monash University has been the cornerstone of my journey from international student to education professional. With a Bachelors and PhD in Engineering, I’ve contributed a decade to the Faculty of Engineering and now serve as the Lead Educational Designer at the School of Psychological Sciences. I have been privileged to experience and shape the dynamic facets of our university, and I continue to volunteer in various campus initiatives and strategic projects as a Monash ambassador.

My diverse experience provides a unique perspective on Monash's ecosystem and its global impact potential. I passionately advocate for education for all and mobilisation of global workforce as a charter to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). I bring firsthand knowledge of the challenges and innovations that define Monash as a leader in higher education and research.

If elected to the University Council, I commit to:
• Strengthen global partnerships and integration of SDGs into Monash’s strategy
• Foster the trilogy of academia, industry and work-ready graduates through education innovation
• Champion student success and staff wellbeing as core priorities
• Promote conducive practices for addressing workplace challenges
• Advance accessibility, equity, and inclusion across all university initiatives

I will bring my multi-perspective, commitment, and dedication to the University Council as a director of honesty and a strategic steer head, ensuring that decisions are made with integrity in the pursuit of excellence. With the council, I am dedicated to Impact 2030, positioning Monash at the forefront of innovation, academic excellence, and global engagement along with a thriving, impactful university community.
Prof Xibin Zhang
