Hey Flinders! My name is Sean Henschke and I am running to be your Student President in 2021 with the Activate team. I’m currently serving as your General Secretary and studying a Bachelor of Arts.

From actively participating in the establishment of the Be a Better Human Campaign, to launching ‘The Queer Society’, I have been a strong and consistent voice for all students since first being elected to Student Council.

Since first being elected I have been recognised as National Queer Student of the Year, FUSA Club Member of the Year, and the Australia’s 30 under 30 LGBTIQ role models. I simply could not have achieved everything I have been able to without the support of my Activate comrades.

During my time as General Secretary, the Activate team and I have ensured that FUSA is well resourced and has your back. We introduced expanding funding options for clubs, and continued to provide them all with accessible resources. I have also worked to expand FUSA’s reach across the University through major projects such as renovating the clubs space and creative new and expanding existing autonomous spaces across all campuses.
We need a Student President who is experienced in the challenges facing FUSA. I believe in a strong and independent FUSA and will ensure that the foundations left by this year’s Student Council to incorporate FUSA and make it independent from the University do not go to waste.

The Activate team and I have the experience and drive to lead an independent FUSA that will have the resources and capacity to fight against student poverty, campaign against government attacks, and ensure our campuses are safe for each and every student!

Hey Flinders People! My name is Molly and I am running to be your next General Secretary with the Activate team. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Social Work. I was fortunate enough to be elected as your Indigenous Students Officer in 2019 and have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Student Council.

During my time on Student Council, I have been able to achieve more inclusivity of the Indigenous culture at FUSA by making sure that they always have the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags hang up, also having an Indigenous artwork piece. When in lock-down I was still able to work with the FUSA staff to produce an online reconciliation week by creating a Spotify list of Indigenous artist a list of Indigenous movies.

At the moment I am currently working on NAIDOC community that consists of both students and staff to create more inclusive NAIDOC events. I have been resurrecting the Frist Nations Collective on Facebook and having the first AGM. Working with Yuggorindi to create study space down at Sturt. Also as the Indigenous officer, I have been meeting with the Equal Opportunity and Diversity Committee to make sure the new development is more inclusive of Indigenous culture.

If I am elected I will help clubs, collectives, and associations to get back on their feet after the COVID-19, by making sure FUSA staff have a clear understanding of what clubs need and want. Also, I fight for more there are efficient resources for clubs, collectives and associations to connect to and utilise.

I would like to nominate myself for the position of general secretary on the FUSA committee. I believe I would be perfect for this position as I have a lot of experience in a variety of roles. I was the equity officer for the duration of 2017 for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Adelaide Student Branch, I was then the vice-chair person for the duration of 2018, the chairperson for the duration of 2019 and am currently the secretary for the duration of this year. I believe I would make a great general secretary as I not only have experience in the equivalent role on the AIAA committee, but I am also a very organised person. I believe that I would be able to efficiently maintain financial records of all monies and assets of the association, as well as keep track of all the required information for meetings. I have great written and verbal communication skills and am confident that I would be able to present financial reports at each meeting in a concise and professional manner. I have maintained and managed records of the AIAA’s memberships, member details and mailing lists for the past two years, so I have faith in my ability to be able to do this for the FUSA association.

Hey! I’m Benika and I am running for Education Officer with Activate. I’m currently studying a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering (Honours) combined degree with a Bachelor in Design Technology Innovation. Last year I was elected as a General Council Member on Student Council and in July of this year I was fortunate enough to be elected as your Education Officer.

During my time on Student Council I launched the Employability Support Campaign which saw the University allocate $30,000 to help financially assist students seeking resume building qualifications (First Aid Certificates, RSAs, Barista Courses, etc.).

I have also ensured that there is a student focused assessment policy in place for 2021. This policy includes the implementation of clear deadlines for feedback, resubmissions on all major assignments, the removal of unnecessary exams, no assessments weighted more than 40% while ensuring that there are only 3-5 assessment types per topic.

During this semester I have continued to fight for the extension of all Covid Assessment changes, having also launched the ‘Support for Flinders University Students Must Continue!’ campaign which empowers students to voice their support for the continuing Covid-19 relief support.

As a Queer Immigrant and a woman in STEM I have experienced firsthand the systemic inequalities that many students face accessing education and know how important diversity in student representation is. I have also personally experienced the negative impact that a lack of financial support can have on a student’s quality of education. As Education Officer I will continue to advocate for safe and reliable access to tertiary education and will ensure adequate mental health services for students across all campuses to make sure that no students are left behind.

Women should be empowered in everything they are involved in and should be a part of every and all opportunities possible. Given the hardship for women’s collectives at other universities this past year, the demand for strong women’s representation is of high importance. Being involved in empowering women is something I feel strongly about because, despite the cliché, women can change the world and it can start right in our university. I would be honored to be a part of the ‘Be a Better Human Campaign’ steering group, I am extremely passionate about all things women’s rights. I grew up in a small county town, where people are quite sexist, homophobic, etc, so its really important to me to be a part of something that aims to educate people on these issues. I also believe that I am a very friendly and approachable person, so I’m sure female students would feel comfortable coming to me for help in regards to personal and academic matters for me to then refer them to the correct campus/non-campus services. Hey Flinders, hope you’re well. My name is Luca and I am running with the Activate team to be your FUSA Women’s Officer in 2021.

I’m currently studying a combined degree of Criminology and Psychological Science and have a strong passion for social justice. I have played an active role in leadership my whole life, stemming back to SRC, primary and senior school captaincies. As an activist, a personal highlight of mine was presenting services for a week over Autism Awareness Month.

I’m not afraid of the F word (feminism) and consider myself an intersectional feminist. My personal ethos is centered around empowering and validating the experiences of all women. I aim to understand and accommodate for the diverse needs of all people along the gender spectrum, including gender non-binary people and men, of whom I acknowledge are also severely impacted by the patriarchy. As the term ‘intersectional’ implies- if I am elected as your Women’s Officer, I aim to work with the Welfare Officer to continue to supply menstrual hygiene products and oversee the implementation of gender-neutral bathrooms, the Social Activities officer to facilitate women centered events and other Office Bearers to build up the women’s collective as an inclusive environment. 2021 marks the distribution of the Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Survey commissioned by Universities Australia. I understand and embrace the significance of the role of women’s officer during this sensitive period and aim to be an approachable figure to any with issues in regard to this sensitive content.

Here at Flinders, non-men make up the majority of students, and I would be humbled to listen to, learn from and act on your behalf.

This year on Student Council I have upgraded the Women’s Space in the main hub to make it a more inclusive and welcoming space, I have revived the Women’s Collective and will continue to work with it during my time at Flinders. I have been at the forefront of acquiring funding to get gender neutral bathrooms installed across the University and have started work on getting an infant feeding room and STEM women’s space installed near SILC on the Bedford park campus.

Being in the Women’s Officer role this year, I believe that I have gained skills and knowledge that I can use to take the Welfare Officer position to the next level.

Hey Legends! This is Rubayat Sarwar. I came to Australia from Bangladesh to study Master of Business (Finance) under the prestigious Australian Awards Scholarship and am so excited to be running for International Students Officer with ACTIVATE!

Through various cultural activities, I have already developed a very strong connection with International Student Services which is a strong base for the international students when they need to approach to University for any concerns. Besides, solid volunteering experiences with Flinders Career Hub and Flinders Community Market in OASIS as well as my role as a Well-being Ambassador on the ‘R U OK?’ day have made me couple of steps ahead of my competitors for this position.

As an International student, I myself know that international students often feel uncomfortable with new environment and foreign culture. They have faced financial and mental health issues; especially in the COVID-19 pandemic. Sometimes, they get upset by undesired racist incidents. These challenges continuously impact the performance of international students at Flinders University.

If I get elected, I will take initiatives for international students to cope up with unfamiliar environment. As I am already doing my role as Vice-president of Flinders University Bangladeshi Students' Association, I have experience about what difficulties they may face. If I get elected, I will ensure international students clubs’ activities smooth. I will help international students raising their issues to the University administration, especially in the COVID-19 regime. To strengthen anti-racism activities in the university, I will strive my best. If I get elected, it will be an absolute pleasure to make bridge among international and domestic students. Believing in inclusive environment, I will work to arrange different events which will enhance everyone’s cultural sensitivity.

I’m running for queer officer to make flinders university more accessible and safer for queer students especially considering recent toxicity and exclusionary practices that has many Queer students feeling unwelcome in their own community. Hey Flinders! My name is Shanii and I am running to be your next FUSA Queer Officer with the Activate Team. I’m currently a first-year student, studying a Bachelor of Media and Communication.

I’ve spent the last year being the Communications Officer for the Queer Collective, I’ve also spent the last month on FUSA Student Council as a General Council Member. During 2020 I noticed the negative effects that social isolation has had on people and have worked on several projects to support students, and the LGBTQIA+ community, including creating an online art week for Transgender Day of Visibility, that celebrated the diversity of transgender bodies, lives and experiences. Some of the recent things I have been working to help the community are creating quarantine care packages, providing support and information for students struggling from financial hardship and renovating the queer space on campus to make it more inclusive and accessible.

During my time on campus, I have noticed a lack of accessible and inclusive spaces, which has often forced people to be excluded. If I have the incredible opportunity to be elected as your queer officer, I will continue to work towards promoting awareness, acceptance and inclusivity, by advocating for LGBT+ rights, I intend on talking to students and listening to their stories and needs, so I can implement initiatives to support and empower students, create and improving safe spaces.

I’m passionate about ensuring that student voices are heard and continuing to advocate for; refugee rights, raising the age of incarceration to protect children, and ending gay conversion therapy.

I’m running with Activate as they’re a team of progressive, inclusive and passionate people, who are working towards a better future.

Poll: Indigenous Students Officer
Shelly Haseldine

Image for Shelly Haseldine

Hi Flinders! My name is Shelly Haseldine and I am running for 2021 Indigenous Student Officer with the Activate team. I am currently in my first year studying a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood), Bachelor of Arts. I am originally from Ceduna, South Australia, which is roughly eight hours from Adelaide

I was fortunate enough to represent the Indigenous students at my high school as the 2019 Indigenous Captain. In this role, I understood the importance of maintaining a positive relationship with the students and staff, which I will achieve if I were to be elected. By working closely with Yunggorendi and FUSA staff and students, I will be able to successfully and progressively make studying at Flinders University more enjoyable.

As there are many Indigenous students who have had to leave their homes in order to pursue their goals, I strongly believe Flinders University should have a strong, positive and respectful Indigenous community.

I also understand that every student goes through different struggles, this being personal, educational stress or illness. Which is why I will support Indigenous students, no matter how big or small their issue may be. I would ensure important events such as Reconciliation and NAIDOC Week are celebrated by promoting Indigenous history and language, hosting barbecues and movie nights which feature Indigenous films.

I am running with the Activate team because we believe in an inclusive Flinders for all Indigenous people, and have the skills to achieve strong support, guidance and more for Indigenous students.

Our goal is to create a student association that works for you. A FUSA that works to empower students and support clubs as the heart of our university experience.

I have represented and advocated for my Indigenous student community at Flinders across all levels of this university. I will always ensure our voices are heard and keep FUSA accountable to our students. If I am elected, I will ensure that Indigenous students are more accurately represented on FUSA Council than they have over the past year. I will do this by bringing the expertise that I have used when I was president of the Union of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students (UATSIS), the president of Flinders Indigenous Students Association (FISA), and as a student representative on the Working Group of Flinder's inaugural Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and now its Oversteering Committee, to ensure that Indigenous voices are never ignored at a time when our voices must be louder than ever and are appropriately advocated for. Poll: Environment Officer
Amy Tschirn

Image for Amy Tschirn

Hi, my name is Amy Tschirn and I am running for re-election as Environment Officer with the Activate Team.

I am a PhD student researching kangaroo evolution. My undergrad was a Bachelor of Science (Honours) majoring in Ecology & Evolution and Environmental Sciences. For as long as I can remember I have been passionate about the environment; nature is a big part of who I am. I became a scientist so that I could better understand and care for our planet, and I intend on spending the rest of my life doing exactly that.

As your incumbent Environment Officer, I have represented students on campaigns to pressure the uni to stop funding fossil fuels and improve recycling on campus. I’ve worked with Student Council and Clubs to revitalise the community garden, organise climate change protests, run clean ups, planting days and workshops. I co-founded the Sustainability & Environment Club, and I was on the executive of the Palaeontology Society for three years.

But I’m only just getting started! In 2021, I want to continue advocating on issues that are close to my heart - feminism, egalitarianism, social justice and, obviously, environmentalism. I am determined to hold the uni to accountable for their reprehensible fossil fuel-funding investments, push for better green spaces on all campuses, and help people learn to reduce their ecofootprint.

I am uniquely skilled to take on the role of Environment Officer; with my science qualifications and experience working with FUSA, I know what positive changes I can realistically push for and how to most effectively advocate for these.

I will work with the Activate Team, and with you, to ensure that we achieve beneficial environmental outcomes on campus for now, and for the future.

I would like to be FUSA Environment Officer so that:
• The university can provide students with native seedlings that they can plant or keep in a pot at their own residence
• Places where construction without necessary post-construction environmental care has occurred can be restored to their natural states – think large gravel patches which are all too common at Flinders University!
• The native fauna and flora are supported on and off of campus – this includes community-based reforestation projects and maintenance of invasive species
• Events involving students and staff will be created to draw attention to the climate crisis
• The messages of Flinders University scientists are projected to students/staff
• Single-use plastic presence can be dramatically reduced on campus
• Students/staff are supported when creating groups which oppose destruction of the environment
• Ethical and eco-friendly business practices are observed on campus

I take a very pragmatic approach to caring for the environment:

I am volunteering for Trees For Life this year by growing over 300 native tree seedlings for a reforestation project.
I am a member of the Australian Native Plants Society.
I am a member of the World Wildlife Fund.
I am also a beekeeper.

Using evidence-based decision making to influence choices is key, and if elected I will involve Flinders University scientists throughout all projects to ensure well informed decisions can be made and that Australian fauna and flora can thrive!

Your vote takes us one step closer to an eco-friendly Flinders University.
Thank you, vote #1

This included obtaining university support and funding for maximising physical accessibility of all Flinders campuses, including improving wayfinding, lecture theatre access, and signage of features including accessible paths, lifts and toilets.

If re-elected I will ensure the projects I commenced in 2020 are finalised so they can benefit current students. I hope to increase social inclusion and awareness of students with disabilities through Disabilities Collective campaigns and events, including adaptive sports come and try sessions. Hello Flinders! My name is Ange, and I am running to be your next Social Activities Officer under Activate. I am currently a first-year student studying medical science. As a first-year student, I know first-hand how difficult it can be to maintain an excellent work-life balance and the importance of doing so.

In my previous role as a Northern Adelaide State Secondary Schools' Alliance, Youth Action Team (NASSSA YAT) member, I was involved in running countless activities and events that promoted interschool relationships and the wellbeing of students. Such events included a student-led anti-bullying conference as well as raising awareness and a better understanding of students with Autism and Intellectual Disabilities.

If successful, I will work hard with students and Flinders staff to create invigorating activities that are accessible for all. I will maintain and increase the strong interpersonal relationships between FUSA and clubs by ensuring that clubs are an integral part of the process when holding events run by FUSA. The engagement and opinion of students will be a key factor with events being largely dedicated to students own unique university experience and as relief from academic stress. Whether that be through pub crawls, BBQ’S, dedicated club activities/events, etc.

Following the events of COVID19, I know now more ever, the importance of social interactions and student engagement. I am extremely excited to be running as a candidate under Activate and look forward to representing you all!

Poll: Mature Age Students Officer
Ethan Zimmermann

Hey Flinders! My name is Ethan Zimmermann and I am running to be your FUSA Mature Age Students Officer with the Activate team. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Philosophy.

At the most recent meeting of Student Council, I was elected as your Mature Age Student Officer after my nomination was unanimously supported. I nominated myself for this role as mature aged students have the least dedicated support services, with ongoing cuts and regularly being forgotten from the university experience.

I started my university journey by enrolling in Foundation Studies, an experience which is common for many students starting later in life. I am living within the Deirdre Jordon Village at Flinders University, which has allowed me to be connected to the university community and understand the vital needs of students’ living on and off campus. I am currently working on projects to support mature age students during Covid-19 and ensure that they have equal access to education, despite the many technological challenges of external education.

If I am elected to continue in my role as Mature Age Students Officer, I would ensure mature age students are no longer forgotten and made a key part of student life. I would also ensure that we get better access to mental health services and financial assistance. I will fight to create spaces and opportunities for mature aged students to have access to dedicated support and assistance in their studies - recognising the diverse issues that mature aged students face.

I am running with the Activate team because they are progressive and have continued to create new and better experiences for Flinders students.

In 2013 I arrived Australia and commenced my study as an international student. At that time I came across some difficulties, such as language barriers and cultural differences, but by receiving lots of help and support from the unversity, I successfully graduated and now I'm working as a nurse.
I came back to university this year for further study, and I'm looking forward to help other students as I was helped before. I would like to work with other members of FUSA to assist and advocate for our students.

The role of a council member forms a critical link between the Association and the student body, and as a first-year student, I believe that I can offer a fresh and innovative perspective on the state of affairs and give 110% to the various future campaigns and initiatives of the Association.
I pride myself of being a friendly and sociable person who is open for a chat with anyone at any given time to discuss a variety of topics and believe that this would be crucial in the role of a council member when liaising with the student cohort. Whilst leadership roles have been a constant throughout my primary and secondary schooling years, I am an advocate of lifelong learning and believe that this role would provide an invaluable opportunity for me to further develop and hone the key skills required in order to serve the university and its students with efficacy in this role.

I’m Harvey Menadue, a socialist activist and I’m running with Left Action for General Councillor. This year has been a year of turmoil all over the world. From the cataclysmic climate-fuelled bushfires at the start of the year, to global pandemic of the coronavirus and the collapse of the economy, alongside the continual police brutality in America and here in Australia, widening inequality, attacks on the LGBTQI+ community and migrants.

But we have also seen resistance. Mass multi-racial protests of hundreds of thousands in America has struck fear into the heart of American capitalism and racism. There have been protests in Lebanon after the explosion in Beirut and against the anti-democratic leadership of Lukashenko.

At the the end of last year and the beginning of this year university students across Australia organised snap protests to call for climate justice, with young people marching in the tens of thousands in the midst in the worst bushfire season yet against Scott Morrison. Students showed up en masse to the Black Lives Matter rallies in Australia, joining the fight against racism that had been sparked in America.

I believe it is an obligation for students in their unions to not only support protests and to stand with the oppressed, but to take initiative to organise students to be part of struggles against oppression and to lead students in fights against education cuts and climate change. Having left-wing activists organising in FUSA will be vital to this.

Hi Flinders! My name is Callan Alexander, and I am incredibly excited to be running as one of your 2021 General Council Members with Activate! I’m currently in my second year studying a Bachelor of Arts Enhanced Program for High Achievers majoring in philosophy and minoring in women’s studies and politics.

I plan to bring my empathy and support for feminist and LGBTQIA+ issues into an official role as a General Member of Student Council, supporting safe and inclusive spaces for women, queer people and people with disability. My experiences in being involved in student councils and leadership positions in high school as well as my continued activism and support for workers has helped prepare me for representing student voices in an official capacity.

On campus clubs and communities of people with similar interests play a pivotal role in creating a welcoming, engaging and fun experience for students. As a General Council member, I will strive to help and support Flinders clubs and collectives. I am a current student at Flinders University studying medical science, in 2015 I completed my first undergraduate degree at Flinders, which was Bachelor of Nursing. With the strengths and knowledge I have gained I'm currently working in post-anaesthetic recovery unit as a registered nurse, and now I'm dong a second degree to pursuit an alternative career path.
In my past Uni life I received lots of supports from student council. Whenever I feel difficult to balance my study and life, or whenever I have a question about my topics, I always seek help from student council and they would offer really good advice and provide relevant services. Thus I would like to join student council today and become a member of you, so I could help other students through their challenges or hardships.
Tsz Shing Roy

My name is Roy and I’m currently in my first year of study of. master of I.T. As a international student from Hong Kong, I know how difficult university life can be, particularly for people from overseas. I'm very passionate about working to make sure that this organisation can keep making student life as awesome and worthwhile an experience as possible. More than that, I have been very involved in university society, such as volunteer of Oasis community market, member of flinders badminton club. That is why one of my goals, if elected, would be to improve relationships with Clubs and Societies.

I would like to nominate myself for a position as a general committee member on the FUSA committee. As I have spent the past three of my four years at the AIAA on the executive committee, I have an understanding of what is required of the general committee members and how important they are in assisting the committee officers and members of the student council to help the association run smoothly. I believe that my past experience in a variety of positions on the AIAA will allow me to step up and act as a delegate or proxy on behalf of the student council when needed in an efficient and professional manner. I am a very confident and friendly person and believe that I would be able to affectively promote campaigns and initiatives of the association to the student cohort.
Hieu Hoang

Hi Flinders! My name is Hieu Hoang, from Vietnam. I am studying Master of Social Work at Flinders University under the Australian Awards Scholarship (AAS). This election, I am running to be your General Council member with Activate. Before coming to Australia, I was the vice president of a local non-profit organization for people with disabilities, which offered me a good opportunity to work with and for vulnerable groups to promote their wellbeing. I come here with my family and two small kids. The scholarship helps me and my family experience great memories in Australia.

Being an International Student, a student with disability, and a busy mum with kids alongside assignments from the course, I acknowledge the intertwining challenges that international students, disabled students as well as mature students like me have experienced. First, being unfamiliar with a new educational system, foreign cultures and the language barriers, many of us may find ourselves difficult to adapt to an academic journey. Second, these difficulties can become worse with international students with disabilities without appropriate support from the university, especially to access to information and services that help them get fully engaged. Third, for those students who are temporary immigrant parents like me, it is challenging and mentally exhausting to balance between studying and caring for our families, particularly, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

By understanding all of those issues, if I get elected to be a General Council member, I will be cooperating with the International Student Officer to run activities for international to overcome their challenges and enjoy the time studying here. Furthermore, I will be closely working with the Disability Officer to enhance appropriate services to promote an inclusive and accessible university for them.

I would like to run as a part of the student council and Flinders since I believe that I would be able to help represent other students at the University and help get their ideas across in a well respected manner: As well as this I am hoping to further push myself in terms of seeing what my potential can be whilst I am studying at flinders. Although this is my first active role I have applied whilst being at Flinders. I am already on 1 committee and hope that I will be able to help develop my skills I have already learnt from that and bring them to this postion As a General Council member. In conclusion I am happy for the opportunity that has been given to me whilst being at the University, and I hope I can help others in the way I have been helped.

In the context of health, ecological and economic crises, the Liberal government are on an all-out offensive against students, workers and welfare recipients. I want to fight to defend our rights, living standards and quality of education.
It is only by mobilising students and fighting back that we can defend our interests against neoliberal governments (both Labor and Liberal) and University management. This is what Left Action activists like myself have consistently done. We will fight education cuts, no compromises!
Left Action stands in solidarity with all of those fighting against the injustices of capitalism. We oppose all forms of oppression: sexism, racism and LGBTI oppression.

Hey Flinders! I’m Benika and I am running for the opportunity to be one of your delegates for the National Union of Students (NUS) National Conference with the Activate team. I’m currently studying a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering (Honours) combined degree with a Bachelor in Design Technology Innovation.

Last year I was elected as a General Council Member on FUSA’s Student Council and in July of this year I was fortunate enough to be elected as your FUSA Education Officer. During my time on Student Council I have always prioritised using my platform to voice student’s needs. Moving forward I want to represent Flinders students on a national level to ensure that NUS is a progressive and influential voice, advocating for positive changes to benefit all students.

This year has been incredibly difficult for many students globally. The Covid-19 pandemic forced universities to move the bulk of their teaching and assessment online which had clear negative effects on students academic, mental, physical, and financial wellbeing. During these difficult times students turned to the government for support but instead were met with funding cuts and financial threats . The Liberals plan is to increase fees for degrees that they haven't deemed to be job worthy, while simultaneously cutting access to the HECS-HELP loan system if a student fails half of their first year topics. This will result in a 113% increase in course fees for some degrees while axing government funding towards all degrees.

With the government's most recent attacks on higher education it is now more important than ever to vote for representatives that are dedicated to promote your rights as students.

At the moment I am in my first year of a Bachelor of Social Work, I was studying a Bachelor’s degree in Tourism and Events combined with a Bachelor of Art. That is where I figured out my passion for helping others get through tough situations in life. I am currently the Indigenous Student officer with this I was able to represent and advocate on behalf of the Indigenous student here at Flinders University.

All students in today’s society are facing a wide ray of issues, including high education fee cuts and hikes, environmental problems, racial discrimination, women’s rights issues, LGBTQI+ issues, student poverty, mental health struggles, lack of support for international students and so much more. Students issues need to be addressed at a national level and we need more Indigenous people speaking at a national level.

Hi! My name’s Laurence Lacoon Williamson and I’m running to represent Flinders students at the National Union of Students this year.

Myself and other Left Action candidates are anti-capitalist activists. We think student unions, locally and nationally, should spearhead progressive resistance to the agenda of our right-wing government and our Vice Chancellors driven by nothing but short-term profits.

I want NUS to meaningfully stand with international students. The Australian economy relies heavily on the exploitation of international students, with universities treating them as cash cows in their degree factories, and businesses severely underpaying them for profits. Under Covid, many international students are stranded in Australia and have lost their jobs. We call on Flinders university to waive international student fees and the government to extend Covid welfare to International Students.

My name is Sean Kemp and I will be a great addition to FUSA as a General Council Paper. I am in my third year of a Bachelor of Media and Communications and intend to continue on to a master’s degree. I am currently a HASS student representative for the Media and Communications course and am part of the Course Quality Advisory Group.
I will bring strong communication and organisational skills to the Union of Student Delegates. I am proud of my ability to relate to nearly anyone, regardless of their background or beliefs. I also strongly believe in the power of encouragement and feel immense pride when I help someone achieve something they thought was outside their grasp.
As a student representative I am currently in the process of setting up an academic association to give media students a place to collaborate and form professional networks. Even prior to being appointed a student representative I had made efforts to create spaces for Media and Communications students to get to know each other, help each other out, and otherwise complain about the difficulties of tertiary studies.
I want to work towards making Australia a fairer place for all of those not being reciprocated for their fair go and know that FUSA will give me an avenue to start that mission in earnest.

I would love the opportunity to attend the conference as one of your delegates to represent the interests of Flinders Students at a national level. This year as the FUSA Women’s Officer I have been involved in various NUS campaigns. Including Raise the Rate For Good, Kill the Bill and No Fee Hikes! What the government is doing to students is absolutely disgusting. They harm not only Flinders Students but all students across the country.

I want to ensure that NUS fights for climate justice. At the beginning of this year, we saw mass protests against climate change during bushfire season, mobilised by university students. Now in the midst of a global crisis, California is on fire, and our own fire season is not too far off either. We need urgent action on climate change and we need student activists to mobilise again. Hey Flinders! My name is Josh, I’m a Bachelor of Political Science & International Relations Student and am incredibly proud to be seeking your election for delegation to the NUS National Conference with the Activate team!

As your Student President this year, and FUSA General Secretary and Education Officer previously, I have led Activate on Student Council to build FUSA into a fighting force for your rights and welfare as students. Increasing funding for Clubs, Collectives and Academic Associations, reforming FUSA’s regulations from the ground up to increase accountability and accessibility of your representatives, securing financial and academic support for students during Covid-19 - none of this would have happened without the work of Activate.

We’ve achieved so much during my time on Student Council but our fight continues. Our universities sector is being increasingly corporatised and driven for profit right in front of our eyes. Campuses across the country are unsafe for women, non-binary people, people of colour and international students as our learning spaces continue to be tarnished with sexual violence, racism and xenophobia. Students continue to be blocked out of higher education for factors completely out of their control. This isn’t fair, and our national peak body needs to be a fighting force for everyone seeking higher education.

You’ve seen what Activate can accomplish on campus. Even during the most difficult period for students during Covid-19, Activate was the only force driving for more protection and support for students. We need more like minded, progressive, staunch student activists on our Student Council and in our national peak body.

Hey Flinders!

My name is Sean Henschke as well as running to be your Student President and to be a delegate to the National Union of Students (NUS) National Conference on behalf of Flinders Students with the Activate team!

I was fortunate to have attended two NUS National Conferences and have seen the importance of NUS and how it can improve and shape student life on campus. It is crucial that we have a strong progressive voice for students at NUS.

Activate will fight to ensure that students have autonomy to ensure they have spaces that are safe on campus and their initiatives. We will continue to combat student poverty and fight raising the rate of Newstart and Youth Allowance. As well as ensure NUS fight for a sustainable future and combats Climate Change.

It is important that we stop the growing exploitation of International Students as solely revenue for universities while many live in poverty. These conditions have worsened for all international students due to the Covid19 pandemic.

A strongly funded university sector is crucial to combating the Covid-19 pandemic, not only in promoting positive health outcomes but to ensure students are able to graduate with the practical skills and institutional knowledge required for their workforce. We also require a national peak body that will stand up to government attacks on education and fight for a return to free, fully funded, fully accessible tertiary education.
