Poll: National Union of Students (NUS) Delegates 2017
POCOCK, Oliver

I am nominating for the position of National Union of Students (NUS) Delegate because I am passionate about the role Western Sydney University can play in national campaigns regarding tertiary education. I can bring experience to this role, having been chose to be the delegate to the NUS Education Conference for 2017, which was hosted in Brisbane from the 4 – 7 July. Students across the nation are working together to help make their universities a better place, and I believe it is time WSU joined that organisation by sending a dedicated and passionate delegate to the National Conference at the end of the year.
If I am elected as a Delegate to the National Conference, I promise to represent my fellow students and my university with the dignity and self-control such a position demands, while passionately participating in discussions for campaigns for the 2018 academic year.

The National Union of Students has so much potential for effective change at Western Sydney University. I am particularly passionate about the improvement of welfare services for students on campus. This means fighting for NUS campaigns like “Your Rights at Work, Home and Uni” to be rolled out on a broader scale across Western Sydney University’s campuses. I will fight to ensure NUS remains accountable and representative. I am currently studying my second year of an International Studies/Social Science degree at the Parramatta Campus. If elected I want to represent ordinary students that don’t normally have the time to get involved in student politics on a national scale. WSU deserves to be represented in the National Union of Students and I will fight to make sure that we get our fair share of time and resources from the National Union of Students’ Office-bearer team of 2018.
CHOGA, Wayne

I am an engineering student in my second year. I want to be a delegate to the National Union of Students so I can fight to represent real students on a national scale. I want to see more campaigns run at WSU through the NUS and being a delegate will help me do this. Vote for something fresh and vote [1] Wayne Choga for NUS Delegate.
SONG, Valerie

My name is Valerie Song and I am running for the position of delegate to the National Union of Students. I am currently in my first year of a Bachelor of Arts and I am really excited about getting involved in the National Union of Students. I want to represent students so we can have a voice nationally and make sure we roll out campaigns run by the National Union of Students’ Office Bearers across Western Sydney University’s campuses. I want the NUS to focus on reaching out to students on campuses that aren't necessarily close to city centres.
BRACEWELL, Dane

In the current Australian political climate, solid student representation and leadership is essential in ensuring the highest quality education and university life for our students.

Dane Bracewell is a 2nd year Arts/Law student with the passion and drive to represent students at the NUS National Conference. Western is set to lose $54.1m in Commonwealth funding as a result of cuts to higher education - I’ll fight to keep SSAF and continue to push for increased university funding for vital student services.

NUS needs to be accountable to ALL students - transparency ensures that decisions are made openly and all students are consulted.

Respect.Now.Always. and #NeverOK continue to be a driving force of change at universities around the country - but what about us? SSAF should directly fund counselling and support for our own students.

Vote [1] for students and services.
Vote [1] for stronger voice.
Vote [1] Dane - NUS.

Hi, my name’s Jordan Idiare (yes, as in “I dare” you), and I’m currently in my first year studying the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery at the Campbelltown Campus. The NUS is an important body that acts as the voice for university students. As your delegate, I’d use my skills to ensure that your views as students of Western Sydney are heard on this national platform.

I have experience in state-level advocacy as a member of 2015 NSW Youth Parliament, representing my electorate in supporting a variety of bills – one of which was incorporated into NSW Government policy. On the national level, I’ve represented young Australians as one of the Inky Award Judges, the only youth literature award decided by youths. During my first year at WSU, I’ve become my grade’s current representative for GPSN, helping coordinate events that provides medical students with career skills and guidance.

Applying for the NUS delegate position it is my hope that as part of a Western Sydney University team, I will be able to provide more exposure to the issues that are important to our students. It is imperative that we bring the fights for free and quality education for our metro and regional campuses, increased welfare and social protections for all, and furthering our fights for inclusion and acceptance of all students.
I am incredibly passionate and dedicated to improving university life for all our students, and it is with this mind-set I want to represent the diverse student cohort and bring about real and positive changes.
GISMONDO, Nicole

I am a fourth-year student studying law/international studies, who has spent tireless hours advocating for students over the past few years. I have served as an SCC Clubs Representative, an SRC Representative, a W’SUP editor, a member of many Campus Life Committees, the chair of the SSAF distributing SAG Forum, and founded Western Sydney Women’s Collective. I wish to again represent Western Sydney University students at this national forum, to make sure that Western students are represented at a national level. I hope to again make sure that Western students are submitting policies at this level, and are making our voices heard in relation to fee deregulation, cuts to HEPP, and the general corporatisation of universities.
