Abolish council rates

This elections vote -buying spree has been a gross demonstration of short-term approaches to government. Throwing out billions of dollars on the run is not a responsible response to community needs.
We need a commonwealth resources authority for integrated management of resources in Australia.
We need a major review of the responsibilities and funding of the three tiers of government - a recent Senate report showed duplication wastes around $20 billion a year.
Education and Health overlap wastes money between the Commonwealth and the State. At the bottom of the pile are unemployed youth, rural people and the elderly. Rural hospitals and bulk billing should be especially protected
Local Government is expanding across a whole range of activity encouraged by State and Commonwealth with grants and new programs for political mileage. Then ratepayers are left to cover maintenance costs. We are over governed and overtaxed.
Council rates are an unjust and escalating tax, particularly on the elderly, home buyers, farmers and people on fixed incomes. Local government now supports a growing bureaucracy with salary levels over which councils and ratepayers have almost no control.
Council rates should be abolished through more efficient federalism.
